Iphitos Tennis Club
The Iphitos Tennis Club is the venue of the BMW Open each year. This beautiful old club has been in existence since 1892 and has hosted some of the most illustrious German tennis events over the years, including the German Masters in 1990 and the Women’s Bundesliga in 2002.
Situated in the heart of Munich and abutting the serene English Garden, the club boasts 17 clay tennis courts, and has fitness facilities and a golf course thrown in. The clay surface is made up of red clay, the traditional surface of all European clay court events. The red clay surface is markedly slower than green clay which is used in the United States – this may well be the reason why so few Americans have taken part in or won at the BMW Open.
The club is named after King Iphitos of Elis, one of the original proponents of the ancient Olympic Games. According to Greek mythology, the king approached the Oracle of Delphi and asked what he could do to save Greece from civil war and disease. The Oracle answered that he should declare a sacred truce with his adversaries, the Spartans, and organise games in honour of the gods.
“May the games begin!” will be relevant again, twelve centuries later, when warriors of a different kind take to the courts and battle it out for one of the most coveted titles in German tennis.
