BMW Open Tennis Tournament

Held each year in the spring, the BMW Open attracts leading international tennis players who travel to Munich to test their skills and ability against the best in the world. Unlike the formality of Wimbledon and other top tennis events, the BMW Open encourages a relaxed, family feel, where players, officials and spectators mingle in the grounds of the beautiful Iphitos Tennis Club, bordering the English Garden in Munich.

The event is one of the foremost on Munich’s annual calendar, and there is a variety of exciting fringe programmes which entice young and old alike. Live music, entertainment by top Bavarian personalities and unbelievable tennis makes the BMW Open a favourite of all avid tennis fans. Philipp Kohlschreiber gave local fans a whole lot to cheer about when he became the first German since Michael Stich in 1994 to win the coveted title in 2007. The BMW Open is the second clay court tournament to be held in Europe annually, after the Monte Carlo Masters. Leading players like to take the opportunity to hone their clay court skills before the French Open at Roland Garros. It is part of the ATP International Series, which offers more ranking points than the Challenger Series, but less than the ATP International Series Gold, the Masters Series or the Grand Slams.

Since 1974 the BMW Open has attracted legends of the game – Guillermo Vilas, Manuel Orantes, Ivan Lendl, Mark Philippoussis and Nikolay Davydenko. More recently local stars like Benjamin Becker, Tommy Haas and Nicolas Kiefer have battled it out with Olivier Rochus, David Nalbandian, Mikhail Youzhny and Marcos Baghdatis. The 2008 event will be the 93rd International Tennis Championships of Bavaria and will run from Monday 28 April to Sunday 4 May 2008. It is contested on an outdoor clay court surface and has a draw of 32 men’s singles and 16 men’s doubles.

The prize money will be in the region of €355 000.

Why not become involved in this awesome German spectacle and choose the winner of the 2008 BMW Open tennis tournament? Could the Germans make it a back-to-back victory or will Baghdatis, Rochus or Nalbandian walk away with the honours?
